Summerhill glides elegantly and effortlessly into the tradition of intimate, melodious, subdued and chic pop music. The genre began with the bossa nova wave of the early 1960s, via artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrid Gilberto. And don’t forget one of the decade’s biggest cult stars, Claudine Longet, a vocalist who has won a special place in Summerhill’s hearts. Contributing to the genre in more recent times are artists such as Saint Etienne, Julee Cruise and Belle & Sebastian.
In its modern form, which Summerhill demonstrates, the style can be described as acoustic indie pop, cool, melancholic and melodious — music that has the same effect on the listener as a cool breeze on a hot, hot summer day. It’s worth noting that the group’s first single, “Parking Lane,” immediately earned a slot on the playlist at Denmark’s biggest radio station P3.
The distinction naturally raises expectations about the group’s debut album to be released by Bonnier-Amigo on 10 September 2007. The album will only contain the bands own compositions, in the same style and groove of the seductive “Parking Lane,” a track that seems to caress the listener’s heart.
REVIEWS:
Leading Danish music magazine GAFFA wrote: “…it sounds like somewhere you’d like to spend a long summer day. I certainly think so after listening to the band Summerhill’s debut album………The first half of the album and the last couple of songs are particularly worthy of praise, especially the debut single “Parking Lane”. If you like melancholy, it doesn’t get much better than the album’s fourth track, “Cherry”……” GAFFA**** September 2007
“…It sounds like beautiful Danish pop. The trumpet and strings intro make everything sound like a soundtrack from an old Doris Day film…and after nine songs we realise it: Summerhill are like a new Hush (leading Danish pop-duo) – only better.” DANISH DAILY NEWSPAPER, BT **** September 2007
Women’s magazine WOMAN wrote:“…Melodic, acoustic chick-pop with the same sort of restrained, sophisticated sound as Saint Etienne. Summerhill is a trio that makes delicate, refined pop music. If you’re a regular radio listener you’ll definitely know the single “Parking Lane” from their album. So let your hair down, put your legs up and let Summerhill in under your skin. A wonderful, soul-healing debut.” WOMAN **** September 2007
